Two PostDoc positions with NUS

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Resilient Water Systems Group (SUTD) invite applications for two Research Fellow (Postdoc) positions in Ecohydrology Modelling and Water Resources Management to begin in early 2023.

The project “On the origin of droughts in Mainland Southeast Asia—implications for water and energy security” aims to disentangle the origin of recent droughts in Southeast Asia and, therefore, determine how management and climatic influences are affecting the spatial distribution of water availability in the present and in the future. In particular, the project aims to: (1) quantify the spatio-temporal variability of water fluxes in the hydrosphere and biosphere, (2) quantify how water management interventions redistribute water availability, (3) examine how future changes in hydro-climatological conditions and anthropogenic interventions will affect droughts in the next decades, and (4) determine how future droughts will affect water and power supply security.

Qualifications (Position 1 – Ecohydrology Modelling). We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree (or conclusion expected within 3-4 months) in Civil/Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science preferably in the fields of Ecohydrology, Hydrology, Biogeosciences, Climate Change Impacts or related disciplines that includes specific and broad knowledge in the areas of ecohydrology and land surface processes. Candidates with an interdisciplinary background are welcome, but strong data analytics skills and knowledge of process-based numerical modelling tools is required. Very solid modelling skills, including programming skills (e.g., Matlab, R, Python) are a fundamental pre-requisite for the position. Experience with large-scale computing would be preferable. Previous experiences in international contexts are also positively evaluated. The candidate is expected to be a highly organized and proactive person and able to work both in team and independently. Demonstration of innovative scientific results obtained during the PhD and communication skills are important elements of evaluation. A proficient command of oral/written English is essential.

Qualifications (Position 2 – Water Management). We are looking for a candidate with a PhD degree (or conclusion expected within 3-4 months) in Civil/Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science preferably in the fields of large-scale catchment hydrology, remote sensing, reservoir operations, and climate impact assessments. Candidates with an interdisciplinary background are welcome, but strong data analytics skills and knowledge of process-based numerical modelling tools is required. Very solid modelling skills, including programming skills (e.g., Matlab, R, Python) are a fundamental pre-requisite for the position. Experience with VIC (or similar models), Geographical Information Systems, and large-scale computing would be preferable.

Responsibilities. The candidates will be responsible for completing the scientific tasks of the project as well as lead and contribute to publications. They are also expected to work on the integration of the different tasks carried out by the research team.  Besides contributing to the research activities of the project, the successful applicants are expected to support in a broader sense the research of the Ecohydrology group (at NUS) and Resilient Water Systems Group (at SUTD), thereby providing occasional support to graduate students (MSc and PhD).

Terms of appointment. The successful candidates will be offered a Research Fellow (Postdoc) position for 24 months with possibility of extension based on performance and fund availability. The contract conditions follow the National University of Singapore regulations. Working conditions are excellent and Singapore is an attractive city rated very high in terms of life quality and living standards.

Application procedure. Applications should include in a single .pdf file: (i) a motivation letter, (ii) a detailed Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications, and (iii) contacts of 2 to 3 reference persons. Shortlisted applications will be asked to participate to an interview that will take place over video. Applications should be submitted at the following links:

Additional information about the position may be obtained by writing to A/Prof. Simone Fatichi (ceesimo@nus.edu.sg) or to A/Prof. Stefano Galelli (stefano_galelli@sutd.edu.sg). Screening for the position will start on November 20th and the positions will remain open until filled. The expected appointment date is the earliest possible following the committee decision.
