IFL Discussions on Emerging Approaches and Synergies

Building from the successes of the MultiSector Dynamics (MSD) Urban Working Group seminars, we will host a series of monthly panel discussions focused on providing a venue for early career researchers (graduate students, post-docs and university and national laboratory early career staff) within the Urban Integrated Field Laboratories (IFL) program to share their research and discuss synergistic opportunities across projects, as well as providing an opportunity for the wider urban research community to understand and benefit from the ongoing activities of the IFL program. The aim of these panels is to facilitate collaborative and intellectually engaged discussions among peers about early-stage research with the primary objective to diversify and cross-pollinate ideas, and build community within the broader urban research community. The ideas presented in this discussion panel series will facilitate comparative research on methods for systematically and ethically incorporating anthropogenic processes into earth and environmental systems science.

Panel Discussion on Urban Heat Drivers and Impacts
Panelists Ali Eyni, Mahdad Talebpour, Alamin Molla, Ian Eastacio, and Shaylynn Trego will discuss ideas pertaining advances in urban micro-climate modeling, drivers of urban heat, heat mitigation, and heat planning in cities. This discussion will cover the identification of potential heat urban heat island reduction pathways at neighborhood scales in urban areas and urban neighborhood air temperature variation and surface temperature. In addition, the panelists will also overview the simulation or urban heat islands during heat waves and the characterization and parameterization of air temperature in local climate zones. We invite you to join us as we dig into these topics and uncover current and new scientific questions and approaches to the role of urban air heat drivers in shaping healthier and more resilient urban areas.

Urban Air Quality: Challenges and Insights Across Urban IFLs
Panelists Ben Ahlswede (BSEC), Xiaoyu Chen (CROCUS IFL), Evelyn Deveraux (SETx-IFL), Jason Horne (BSEC), and Robert Jackson (CROCUS IFL) will discuss key challenges in understanding urban air quality, from the effects of local meteorology on atmospheric emissions. The discussion will also cover boundary layer height retrievals during smoke events, lake effects on temperature and air quality, variations in urban carbon and energy fluxes, and the role of surface roughness in atmospheric modeling. We invite you to join us as we dig into these topics and uncover current and new scientific questions and approaches to the role of urban air quality in shaping healthier and more resilient urban areas.
